- About
Construction of the Mechanical Arts building (present-day Merryfield Hall) was completed in 1908. It should be noted there was also a Mechanical Hall on campus at the time (present-day Kearney Hall); that building was used as recitation, lecture, and laboratory space for Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil engineers. By 1920, Mechanical Arts had been shortened to Mechanic Arts.
The central, two-story section of the Mechanical Arts building (seen in the image above) housed administrative offices for each of the "arts" departments headquartered in the building (Industrial Arts and Mechanic/Mechanical Arts), and rooms for display of student projects. This central section also included a lecture room and dark room. The east wing (at right in the image) housed the machine shop, blacksmith shop and stock room, while the south wing (at left in the image) housed the woodworking shop, the carpentry shop, the printing office, and another stock room.
In 1934, the building was renamed the Industrial Arts building.
