The building now known as the Hattie Redmond Women and Gender Center was constructed in 1892 to accommodate the offices of the Agricultural Experiment Station. The new building had desks for thirty students, each of which was supplied with water, gas, and drawers with shelves for the necessary re-agents and apparatus.The station's chemistry lab, which was also used in the instruction of Chemistry, was in the basement. All students at the college were required to take chemistry during their first and second years, four terms for Agriculture and Mechanics students, and three terms for Home Economics students.

Originally, the Chemistry Department was in the administration building; it was moved to the Experiment Station building in 1896. As enrollment increased, plans were made to renovate and enlarge the "chem annex," but the recessions of the early 1900s put an end to those plans; instead, what little enlargement had been started was finished, and the building was considered completed "as is."

Chemistry department operations were relocated to Agricultural Hall upon its completion in 1901, and Chemistry spaces were converted for use in assaying instruction.
