Building History

A color image of the Kelley Engineering Center.

Completed in 2004, the Kelley Engineering building was the first building on OSU's campus - and one of the first in the state - to earn green certification. Planned "green" features of the building included: a large glass atrium to bring in natural light and ventilate interior space; a courtyard water feature; low toxicity finishes and flooring; and a planted eco-roof. The four story, 146,000 square foot structure was built to house the programs of computer science, and electrical and computer engineering, and includes laboratory and research, instruction, and office spaces. Originally scheduled to open in 2004, the start of construction was delayed due to protests by local civic groups, specifically relating to the displacement of People's Park. Ultimately, $15,000 of the Kelley Engineering building's budget was used to relocate the park just west of Gilkey Hall; the Kelley Engineering building was completed in fall 2005.

The building is named for 1950 OSU civil engineering graduate Martin N. Kelley.
