The OSU Child Development Center, also known as Bates Hall, is dedicated to discovering and communicating knowledge that contributes to the optimal development and well-being of young children and their families. This facility offers Head Start and preschool programs, plus programs for parents. The center opened in 1992, the nation’s first center dedicated to studying families throughout the lifespan. Built entirely from private funds, the center’s construction was made possible by what was then the largest gift in OSU’s history from Home Economics graduate Mercedes Bates ’36. Through her leadership as General Mills’ first female corporate officer, Bates grew the Betty Crocker brand into a household icon, and she became the living persona of the brand. Located where the 1938 Nursery School once stood.
