Milam Hall is one of architect John Bennes’ earliest designs for OSU's campus. Its core portion was constructed in 1913 for the School of Domestic Science, which later became known the School of Home Economics, and significant additions to the building were added in 1920 and 1952. At its construction, the building housed the Dean's office was located on the first floor, and offices of professors in Domestic Science and Domestic Art were located on the second and third floors. The Domestic Science Department occupied the basement, first floor, and part of the second floor of the building; the Domestic Art Department was headquartered on the third floor and part of the second floor. Educational amenities included five large laboratories, which could accommodate up to 120 girls at the same time; a laundry in the basement, supplied with electric and water power washers; pressing and sewing rooms, complete with electric irons; and a basement cafeteria that could seat 200.
The Home Economics Building was rededicated as Milam Hall in 1976 to honor the contributions of Ava B. Milam, who was a leading feminist of the era and Dean of the School of Home Economics from 1917 to 1950.
