How to Be an Anti-Racist Book Club Guide

This guide includes the curriculum you need to run a book club based on Ibram X. Kendi's How to Be an Anti-Racist, as well as supplementary reading and videos.

Chapter 14

Goals for Chapter 14

  • Define gendered racism
  • Identify the various ways gender and race intersect

Discussion questions

Go over the group agreements, then discuss the following questions:

  • How has it been for you since the last meeting? Did anything from the book stick with you during that time?
  • What were your “aha!” moments while reading this chapter?
  • How does gendered racism negatively impact people of all races and genders?
  • Are there instances where you specifically see gender racism at OSU? How so?
  • Kendi talks about how their homophobia was instilled through silence. Do you have parallels in your own life? Which has been the stronger influence on you - implicit or explicit statements/behavior?
  • How does your understanding of gender and race match up with what you have been explicitly told about gender and race?
  • How did gender expectations play into treatment of Black mothers?

Wrap up: Depending on time, you may ask people to put these in chat

  • What is a specific action you can take in the next week that is anti-racist?
  • What worked today? What didn’t work?
