Go over the group agreements, then discuss the following questions:
- How has it been for you since the last meeting? Did anything from the book stick with you during that time?
- What were your “aha!” moments while reading this chapter?
- Playing with identity through clothing, accessories, etc., is a critical, lifelong process. What are ways in which race has played into how you present yourself? Have you ever considered that factor before?
- Related quote, pg 109: “Did I think my honey eyes meant I was striving to be White? No way. I was simply refining a cuter version of myself, which studies show is the explanation of most buyers of artificial eyes, complexion, hair, or facial features. I never asked myself the antiracist question. Why? Why did I think lighter eyes were more attractive on me? What did I truly want?”
- Where do you see colorism play out in your own life? How can you combat this?
- Where do you see colorism play out here at OSU? How can we combat this?
- How did your attitude about skin tone develop throughout your life?
Wrap up: Depending on time, you may ask people to put these in chat
- What is a specific action you can take in the next week that is anti-racist?
- What worked today? What didn’t work?
