Marion Bolton Papers, 1950-1984
The Marion Bolton Papers document Bolton's career at Kerr-McGee, an American energy company active in uranium mining in the American Southwest during the middle of the 20th century. Materials primarily relate to Bolton's service as general manager at Kerr McGee's Shiprock site, as well as the lawsuits brought against the company by the Navajo Nation seeking damages and compensation for the endangerment of Navajo mine workers and the destruction of Navajo land.
Donald Everhart Field Notebooks, 1949-1986
The Donald L. Everhart Field Notebooks consists of 27 hard-bound field notebooks documenting Everhart's work as a geologist for the Atomic Energy Commission and various mining companies. The notebooks cover Everhart's work on Operation Plowshare, and document his travels, both domestic and international.
Anne Frewerd Scrapbook, 1945
This scrapbook consists of mementos from her time working at Los Alamos, New Mexico for the Manhattan Project in 1945. Included are souvenir and personal photographs, newspaper clippings covering the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and other ephemera related to her work in Los Alamos, including a telegram and pin.
Ambassador Thomas Graham, Jr. Interviews on Arms Control and Nuclear Disarmament, 2015
The consist of two in-depth oral history interviews conducted in the Fall of 2015, and focusing on Graham's influential 27-year career as a diplomat and negotiator. Both of these interviews have been transcribed and are available online. Graham's tenure with the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency is a major subject of the interviews, as are his memories of specific arms limitation talks conducted throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. From 1970 to 1997, Graham was a participant in the negotiation of every major arms control and nonproliferation agreement that involved the United States. During this same time period, he engaged in diplomatic discussions with representatives of more than one hundred countries.
Barton C. Hacker Papers, 1955-1995
This collection documents Hacker’s career as a historian of radiation safety, and primarily consist of materials related to his service as historian to the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Dosimetry Research Project, beginning in 1979. The collection also contains general research materials, committee documents, and conference proceedings and papers.

The Robert Dalton Harris, Jr. Collection of Atomic Age Ephemera consists of printed ephemera produced from the late 19th century to the present day. The materials comprise broad coverage of many scientific, religious, cultural, industrial, political, environmental, and other aspects of nuclear history. Items are arranged chronologically by date of creation. Robert Dalton Harris, Jr. and his partner Diane DeBlois are authors, editors, historians, independent scholars, and long-time proprietors of aGatherin’, a business that deals in ephemera and original source materials.
Robert Dalton Harris, Jr. Collection on Uranium Mining, 1949-1964
This small collection contains various stock certificates, investment circulars, promotional materials, and geology survey reports documenting the first uranium ‘boom’ in western North America during the early 1950s. Companies from Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Canada are present, and include: Atomic Investors Trust, Santa Fe Uranium Corporation, Radiore Uranium, Abraska Uranium, Big Mesa Uranium, La Ronge Uranium Mines, Beacon Uranium Corporation, Beehive Uranium Corporation, Comstock Uranium and Oil Company, Consolidated Uranium Mines, Inc, Crusader Corporation, Lucky Mc Uranium Corporation, Mayday Uranium Corporation, Radiore Uranium Company, Rex Uranium Corporation, Sabre Uranium Corporation, and Stanleigh Uranium Mining Corporation Limited. Stock certificates are issued to single names of men and women, as well as to dual holders.
Charter Heslep Papers, 1932-1963
This collection is primarily comprised of materials dating from Heslep's time as an employee of the Atomic Energy Commission. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, ephemera, photographs, and sound recordings relating to Charter Heslep's work with the AEC, with emphasis on his efforts to televise U.S. nuclear tests on behalf of the Commission. Notably, the Heslep Papers contain extensive correspondence between Heslep and his wife, Margaret, describing recording and broadcasting preparations for the Upshot-Knothole, Tumbler-Snapper, and Redwing tests. The collection also includes certificates of participation from nuclear tests, and photographs of the Nevada Test Site and the Pacific Proving Grounds, Heslep in his role as official observer, and other nuclear detonations.
History of Atomic Energy Collection, 1872-2014
The History of Atomic Energy Collection is the largest collection related to nuclear history in SCARC collections. Three other series complement the rare book portion of this collection. Materials date from the late 19th century to 2014. Series 2: Ephemera includes stickers, posters, brochures, mailers, fliers, clippings, and other materials. Series 3: Audio includes LPs of retrospective programs and Series 4: Artifacts includes two Geiger counters, a game, and commemorative memorabilia for Operation Crossroads.
Leonard M. Maki Nuclear Power Collection, 1958-1900
This collection consists of books and archival materials related to the development of nuclear power systems in the twentieth century. Of particular note is a collection of documents, dating to the 1960s, which detail ideas and prototypes for nuclear power systems designed to operate in outer space. This collection would be of potential interest to those researching the history of nuclear power and engineering, applications of nuclear technology in space, and nuclear reactor design.
David A. Marcus Letters, 1972-1985
The David A. Marcus Letters are comprised of correspondence between Marcus and politicians, peace activists, religious leaders, scientists, and intellectuals between 1972 and 1983. Topics include the potential for nuclear conflict, the need for a global peace organization, and the future of humankind.
Buena Maris Mockmore Papers, 1916-2010
The Buena Maris Mockmore Papers include materials related to her time as Director of Women’s Activities at the Manhattan Project site in Hanford, Washington. Included in this series are flyers and memos dating from Mockmore’s time at Hanford, and her later reminiscences regarding her work on the project; correspondence with Lieutenant General Leslie Groves regarding his plans to write a book on the project; and materials documenting the life and work of Glenn Seaborg.
Nuclear Free America Records, 1945-2003
This collection documents the activities of this nonprofit resource center throughout the lifetime of the organization. Nuclear Free America facilitated a worldwide antinuclear movement to create "nuclear free zones," or communities where nuclear production, testing, waste, and transportation activities were banned. During its 15 years of operation, more than 200 NFZ declarations were passed by 4,500 local governments in 26 nations worldwide. The collection includes administrative records, records of nuclear free zone declarations by localities around the world, and extensive files related to affiliated antinuclear organizations.
Ava Helen and Linus Pauling Papers, 1873-2013
Linus Pauling (1901-1994), a 1922 OSU graduate and the only recipient of two unshared Nobel Prizes, (Chemistry, 1954; Peace, 1962) undertook a wide range of studies during his 70-year career as a scientist, humanitarian and peace activist. The collection, comprised of over 500,000 items, contains all of Pauling's personal and scientific papers, research materials, correspondence, photographs, awards, and memorabilia. Not only does the Pauling archive reflect Linus Pauling's long and varied scientific career, the presence of Ava Helen Pauling's (1903-1981) papers also indicates their mutual devotion to world peace and to each other.
Paul J. Persiani Papers, 1938-2009
This collection documents the career of Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) physicist Paul J. Persiani. The collection includes research data related to neutron radiation, reactor development, and fuel analysis; administrative files, photographs, and memorabilia from Persiani's time at ANL; records of his participation in the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START); publications, lectures, and teaching materials generated by Persiani; and reference materials including conference proceedings and scientific publications.
Radiation Center Records, 1953-2008
These records are comprised of materials generated between 1953 and 2008 documenting the creation and operation of the Oregon State University Radiation Center. The collection contains administrative correspondence; records of the construction, operation, and maintenance of the Center's facilities and equipment; documentation of research conducted by the Radiation Center on behalf of OSU and other academic institutions, the U.S. Army, Oregon law enforcement agencies, and corporate partners; and records of the Center's day-to-day operations including detailed annual reports and records from several advisory groups.
John C. Ringle Papers, 1960-2012
The John C. Ringle Papers are comprised of materials generated and assembled by John C. Ringle a professor of Nuclear Engineering at Oregon State University. The collection, which contains material spanning 1960 to 2012, includes correspondence, publications by Ringle, research and instruction materials, documentation from the American Nuclear Society and other professional organizations, and records from the OSU Department of Nuclear Engineering and the OSU Radiation Center. The Ringle Papers document John Ringle's career, the history of OSU's nuclear engineering program, and the controversial issue of nuclear power in the United States during the 20th century.
Theodore Rockwell Papers, 1915-2013
This collection documents the life and career of Ted Rockwell, a member of the Manhattan Project, technical director for the U.S. Navy's nuclear propulsion initiative under Admiral H. G. Rickover, and co-founder of engineering firm MPR Associates, Inc. and nuclear advocacy group Radiation, Science, and Health, Inc. The collection includes correspondence, publications, research files, administrative documents, and memorabilia from his career.
Eugene Starr Papers, 1911-1988*
Eugene Starr enjoyed a widespread reputation as a distinguished scientist and engineer. Starr was selected to be one of twenty scientific observers at Operation Crossroads in 1946, and his papers include one folder of correspondence, ephemera, and other papers related to his attendance at and impressions of that event. A member of the Manhattan Project and later a member of the Atomic Energy Commission's Advisory Committee on Reactor Policy and Programs, Eugene Starr was closely acquainted with the development of nuclear power from its inception. The materials in Series 3: Nuclear Power reflect this life-long interest, and specifically detail his contacts with nuclear power interests in the Pacific Northwest.
E. Dale Trout Papers, 1939-1983
This collection consists of materials created and assembled by Trout and his colleague, John P. Kelley, regarding research on X-ray equipment, diagnostic radiology, and the administration of the X-Ray Science and Engineering Laboratory at Oregon State University. Trout and Kelley were faculty in the OSU Department of General Science beginning in the 1960s.
Chih H. Wang Papers, 1947-1984
This collection is composed of materials created and assembled by Wang as a faculty member of the Oregon State University Chemistry Department, Director of the OSU Radiation Center, and Head of the Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering. Materials include professional correspondence, OSU Chemistry Department and Radiation Center research records, workshop, conference, and training program files, OSU administrative records, publications by Wang, and subject files related to chemistry, nuclear science, and nuclear power policy and legislation. The Wang Papers document Wang's career, the founding and development of the OSU Radiation Center, and the growth of nuclear science research and training during the 1960s and 1970s.
Gilbert Zigler Papers, 1962-2014
The Gilbert Zigler Papers consist of materials documenting the career of Gil Zigler as a reactor diagnostic engineer, and his role in the development in the field of noise and vibration monitoring systems in reactors. The collection includes materials from his personal life as well as professional career, while the majority of items are printed materials collected during his career. Of particular note are Zigler's notes on improvements to emergency preparedness and technical support for future nuclear power plant accidents. These improvements are included in Zigler’s collected “TMI-II Gems” under the title “Recommendations for Improved Readiness for Future Nuclear Incidents. "This collection further includes papers written by Zigler and others on the accident and its aftermath, data and notes collected as Zigler assessed the problem with the reactor unit, and correspondence concerning Zigler’s work on the TMI-II unit accident.
