PTRC consultations typically last 30-45 minutes and are held on Zoom. If you would like to work with an OSU Librarian on patent or trademark research, just get in touch by emailing: ptrc-osu@oregonstate.edu. We'll respond within about a day.
Inventors and entrepreneurs in Portland may wish to contact the PTRC located at the Multnomah County Library.
The USPTO Western Regional Outreach Office also supports all of Oregon. Check it out:
Oregon State University maintains an Intellectual Property policy to "clarify ownership, rights, responsibilities, and revenue sharing related to intellectual property conceived of, made, or developed by Oregon State University (“university") or through interactions with the university."
Receiving assistance from the PTRC does not create university ownership over your invention. However, it may apply to IP developed by employees and those under contract to develop such IP for OSU.
For more information about this, read the policy here:
OSU is a hub of innovation, home to a dynamic technology transfer office and numerous innovation labs. Our Patent and Trademark Resource Center enhances the university’s intellectual property (IP) research capabilities, benefiting both campus and community members.
With OSU’s dynamic innovation community, the PTRC is well-positioned to build strong partnerships across the university and Oregon. We aim to create a strong referral network within OSU, ensuring that library patrons can easily access the resources and services they need as they transform ideas into reality.
Innovation partners include:
OSU Libraries developed a strategic action plan in alignment with OSU’s Prosperity Widely Shared (PWS). This work recommended, in part, that we “Establish a Patent and Trademark Resource Center at OSU.” The Library recognized that we can play an important role in supporting “A university that fuels a thriving world."
It's our goal to provide expert patent and trademark research assistance within the university and in our communities.
The map below from patentsview.org shows the concentration of patents that have been issued since 2013 in the Pacific Northwest. In Oregon, IP activity is heaviest in Portland, Corvallis and Eugene. OSU is well positioned to serve these areas.
