For a better sense of floor occupancy, to provide valuable insights to space managers and stakeholders, to assist students in finding available study space, and to more effectively utilize and make space decisions, the library has implemented door and space occupancy sensors. Space managers across campus employ various tools and metrics to assess space data and no universal benchmark or standard applies to all spaces; preferences and space requirements vary campuswide. The OSU libraries are using two vendor sources currently: SenSource (door counts) and Occuspace (space sensors).
Where do you currently use these tools?
- We have door counters at all 3 library branches (Valley, Cascades and Newport) but currently only have zone/area sensors in Valley Library (In Java 2, the main floor spaces, 3rd floor tutoring and rotunda area, and 6th floor northside) as well as Newport (summer 2025 pilot).
What if I don't want my device to be tracked?
- Turn off wifi and bluetooth on your phone. (see Privacy statements on each tab to learn more)
Why do we need these numbers?
- We see space as a service. We want to utilize our spaces to work for all users. Collecting data helps us to make the best use of spaces. Our spaces are designed as a service to foster inclusivity, accessibility, and student engagement. Prioritizing student-centered, sustainable, and versatile environments, we create spaces that support diverse needs and preferences while aligning with the architectural integrity and standards of OSU. By maintaining simplicity, comfort, and flexibility, we strive for our spaces to be welcoming, adaptable, and resource-conscious, enhancing the experience for all. (OSULP Service Philosophy). We are also working on a comprehensive Valley Library space plan with the goal of getting a Valley Library renovation included in OSU’s 10-year capital forecast list. Identify priorities, principles, stakeholders and projects.
Why sensors AND door counts?
- We have door counts for traffic in and out but lack information on where people dwell or what spaces they are using more of less. Sensors allows us to create zones and study usage for particular areas or needs.
