The foundation of our principles are based on the declaration that library space is a service. When we plan development of space related projects OR get an idea for a new space or partner OR when we are choosing between OR when we are considering new partners, these are the questions we ask and baseline principles we want to see in library spaces at OSU:
Is it Student Facing?
People matter
Inclusive (1st generation, EDIAR, ADA)
Accessible, approachable, welcoming
Offer choice for diverse space needs and preferences
Engaging students for input and communicating
Is it Sustainable?
Mindful resource use
Costs including time, budgets, and people must be scaled appropriately
Future repairability and maintenance (vendors, warranties, documentation)
Regularly assessed and evaluated against these goals
Is it Versatile?
Flexibility and adaptability
Spaces that can evolve to meet future needs
Not ‘trendy’ but forward thinking
Is it Consistent?
Follow standards, policies, best practices, universal design
Keep the architecture of the building in mind
Keep it simple! Reduce cognitive and mental load.
Furniture, Signage (language)
Doesn’t have to be uniform in look but in practice
Is it Comfortable?
Balances aesthetics and functionality
Zoning – use and behavior expectations should be clear
Healthy – Ergonomics, Natural light
Safety, Sight lines, Openness
Takes advantage of the unique features of Valley (accessible location, extended hours with staff, etc.)
