OverDrive and Libby

Using Audiobooks for Your Class

Each term, library faculty review the textbooks submitted to the bookstore and select new audiobooks that correspond to assigned titles.

Please note that the audiobooks in our collection will likely not be available for simultaneous use by an entire class. We are restricted to the licensing terms Overdrive sets, and are unable to afford a license for each student. In order for the most students to take advantage of this service, we recommend the following:

  • Please spread the word to return the audiobook as soon as the listener is done with it, rather than waiting for it to expire.
  • Check for alternative formats (such as ebooks) for students unable to get the audiobook copy.
  • If possible, assign course materials that are available as unlimited-user editions. Please contact the Reserves team and your college liaison for assistance.

Licensing Limitations

All books available on the Libby app are subject to licensing restrictions set by Overdrive. These can vary from book to book, but typically include:

  • Only 1 person can access the book at a time
  • Checkouts are limited to 1 week
  • Renewals are allowed if there is no waiting list
  • The person who has the book checked out cannot be forced to return it early

Requesting Titles

We accept purchase suggestions from both students and faculty! Please submit your request via the Course Reserves Request form, and indicate in the notes field that you want an audiobook option.

Deadline: Please submit requests at least one month prior to the start of term, to accommodate processing times.
