Te May ChingFaculty Papers

Te May Ching Papers, 1947-1988
Te May Tsou Ching was a professor of seed physiology at Oregon State University from 1956 to 1988. The Te May Ching Papers are comprised of materials documenting Ching's teaching and research activities as a member of the Crop Science Department and Agricultural Experiment Station at Oregon State University. Her records include personal and professional correspondence; institutional records documenting the activities of the Crop Science Department and other campus units; Ching's engagement with various professional events and organizations, including membership on the Northwest Forest Tree Seed Committee; teaching records including course and advising materials; research files such as project records, laboratory notebooks, and assembled research materials; publications and photographs, including images of specimen samples.

Harold J. Evans Papers, 1947-1992*
The Harold J. Evans Papers consist of materials relating to Evans' nitrogen fixation research, including article reprints, correspondence, course materials, curriculum vitae, employment records, grant proposals, newspaper clippings, photographs, publications, and research/lecture notes.

Louis G. Gentner Papers, 1829-1980
As an entomologist studying flea beetle damage to vegetation, Gentner's work overlapped with botany and horticulture. Though his collection is primarily on his flea beetle research, direct overlaps occur in Series 2: Correspondence, and Series 4: Entomology Field Work and Research Notes. Gentner's family discovered Fritillaria gentneri in Southern Oregon 1942. Gentner worked with Helen Gilkey, curator of the OSC Herbarium (below) to illustrate, identify, and publicize the discovery.

Helen M. Gilkey Papers, 1910-1974
The Helen M. Gilkey Papers are comprised of materials generated and assembled by Helen Gilkey, an American mycologist, alumnus and professor of the Oregon State College Botany Department, and curator of the OSC Herbarium (1918-1951). The materials include personal and professional correspondence; notes, research materials, and drafts of publications authored by Gilkey; specimen photographs; and scientific illustrations created by Gilkey.

Henry Paul Hansen Papers, 1907-1989*
These papers were generated and collected by Henry Hansen, a paleobotanist, who served as Dean of the Graduate school at Oregon State College until 1971. The collection includes research materials, field notes and publications.

William Evans Lawrence Papers, 1893-1945
The William Evans Lawrence Papers consist of materials generated by Lawrence, an OAC Botany professor, including research data, photographs and radio scripts related to Lawrence's work plant physiology, Oregon trees and other topics concerning the horticulture of, primarily, the Pacific Northwest.

Frank P. McWhorter Papers, 1942-1961*
The Frank P. McWhorter Papers document McWhorter’s research on plant diseases as a plant pathologist for the Agricultural Experiment Station at Oregon State College.

Albert N. Steward Papers, 1940-1991
The Albert N. Steward Papers consist of correspondence, course materials, and related documents created and assembled by Steward, primarily during his years as Curator of the Oregon State College Herbarium in the 1950s. Steward earned a BS in Agriculture from Oregon Agricultural College in 1921.

Roy A. Young Papers, 1913-1990
Young came to Oregon State University in 1948 as an Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology. He taught graduate courses on bacterial diseases of plants and plant disease control. Principal research efforts were on diseases of ornamentals and potatoes with emphasis on soil borne diseases and on fungicide research. He served as Head of the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology from 1958 until 1966. Series 1 deals with this history.

Donald B. Zobel Papers, 1935-2008
The Donald B. Zobel Papers consist of materials reflecting Zobel's involvement with the Oregon Flora Project, specifically the Oregon Plant Atlas. Zobel was a faculty member in the Botany and Plant Pathology Department from 1968 until his retirement in 2003.

Donald B. Zobel Collection of Historic Forestry and Vegetation Maps, 1914-1989
The Donald B. Zobel Collection of Historic Forestry and Vegetations Maps consist of maps assembled and created by Zobel for his research in forest ecology and for teaching; the bulk of the maps depict forests in Oregon and northern California.

 

University Records

Botany and Plant Pathology Department Records, 1900-2005
The Botany and Plant Pathology Department Records document research, teaching, and outreach activities in botany and plant diseases at Oregon State University. The records include general and research correspondence, reports, teaching materials, research records, and publications. The records address the diseases of economically important crops and plants grown in Oregon. Botany courses have been taught at Oregon State since the 1870s and the first plant pathology course was taught in 1895; the department was formally established in 1888 as the Department of Botany and Horticulture.

Botany and Plant Pathology Department Photographs, 1900-1982*
The Botany and Plant Pathology Department Photograph Collection primarily consists of photographs of nematodes and the effects of nematode diseases on a variety of plants. The collection also includes an Oregon Forest Products Laboratory photograph album.Images from this collection have been digitized and are available in Oregon Digital.

Herbarium Records, 1891-1997*
The Herbarium Records document the collecting of plant specimens by Oregon State University and include correspondence regarding specimens, exchange lists, gift records. The records also include correspondence of Helen Gilkey, Herbarium curator from 1918 to 1951.

Herbarium Photographs, 1904-1963
The Herbarium Photographs were made or assembled by curators of the Herbarium and students in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology. The images depict a variety of subjects including Pacific Northwest species of plants and trees, the Oregon Agricultural College greenhouses, botany research and teaching, and logging operations.

Warren C. Wilson Western Alpines Project Lantern Slides, 1936-1938
The Warren C. Wilson Western Alpines Project Lantern Slides consist of photographs made by Wilson during a 1936 alpine plant collecting trip in Colorado and Washington. Wilson graduated from Cornell University and was a plant propagator and nursery owner in Maplewood, Oregon, specializing in alpine flora.
