ScholarsArchive@OSU User Guide

This guide helps ScholarsArchive users deposit and manage their content.

Introduction

There are four types of visibility settings in ScholarsArchive, although not all are available in all situations.

  1. Public
  2. Oregon State University
  3. Embargo
  4. Private

Embargoes allow the author to limit access to content for a specific period of time. Embargoes are set so an author can take action before an item is available on the web, such as publishing an article or managing a patent.

The process for selecting an embargo depends on your document. For example, setting an embargo on a Graduate Thesis requires approval of the Graduate School.

Visibility Options

In some cases, we offer exceptions to normal embargoes and restrict access permanently. Certain programs (e.g. the MFA program) lend themselves to visibility exceptions, but given the mission of ScholarsArchive@OSU as an open repository, access exceptions are rarely offered. Email scholarsarchive [at] oregonstate.edu with questions.

1. Public

public access

  • No restrictions. Item available to viewers worldwide.
  • Metadata (author, title, abstract, etc.) available to viewers worldwide.
  • We suggest a Public setting whenever possible to support open scholarship.

2. Oregon State University

OSU-limited access

 

 

 

 

  • Item available to OSU Community only. ONID required to login and view.
  • Metadata (author, title, abstract, etc.) available to OSU Community only.

3. Embargo

► OSU Embargo - Oregon State University to Public

  • Embargo period: generally six months to two years
  • Item available to OSU Community only. ONID required to login and view.
  • Metadata (author, title, abstract, etc.) available to OSU Community only.
  • Item available to worldwide community after embargo period expires.

► Private Embargo - Private to Public

  • Embargo period: dependent on situation
  • Item hidden from everyone but ScholarsArchive@OSU Administrators.
  • Metadata other than author and title hidden from everyone but ScholarsArchive@OSU Administrators.
  • Item and metadata available to worldwide community after embargo period expires.

4. Private

  • Item hidden from everyone but ScholarsArchive@OSU Administrators.
