OSULP Off-Site Storage Project

Project Overview

As some of you may be aware, OSU Libraries and Press has been utilizing a building behind the Kerr Administration building as storage to hold excess materials such as books and journals that don’t fit in the current Valley Library- and the current location of this building happens to be part of the area designated for the new arts and education complex. So, OSU Administration and Facilities are working with us to design and move to a new off-site storage facility in the NYPRO Building on Research Way by Fall/ Winter 2020.  We are also using this move as an opportunity to make improvements to how we are currently storing items, provide these items, and use space both in our storage facility and in the Valley Library.

Part of the process involved in achieving these goals and preparing for the movement of these materials is performing audits of the current collection. We have compared our current print journals collection held by the Valley library against access that we maintain through the Western Regional Storage Trust (WEST). Print journal content preserved in West is currently being removed from our collection in both the Storage Area and first floor, opening space to preserve unique print journal and book holdings and support new, impactful uses of space through partnerships with other OSU units. The recently launched Graduate Student commons in the Valley Library is a prime example.

The next step of the move is to move Special Collections and Archives Research Center (SCARC) collections currently held in the off-site storage building over to the Valley Library and allow for more options to display important content for student learning. The print journals left in storage and on the first floor will be moved over to NYPRO and with the help of the existing Scan and Deliver service we will continue to support the requests from our existing print journal collection.

Expect to see disruptions to the first floor of the Valley library while work is underway on this important project. We have implemented plans to keep disruptions as limited as possible but if you have any further questions about the project, please feel free to contact us with this form or email the OSU Libraries Director of Resources Acquisitions and Sharing at kerri.goergen-doll@oregonstate.edu.
