Information on how to navigate using Harvard Business Review (HBR) materials

Potential Limitations to HBR Sources

When potentially assigning HBR materials, here are some potential limitations to keep in mind:

HBR 500

The HBR 500 refers to a list of the 500 most popular case studies and articles that have no printing or downloading permissions. There is no current list of which articles are part of this collection. Students should still be able to access the case studies through Business Source Complete, but will be unable to have offline access.

Disappearing case studies

Because OSU does not directly license HBR, the content we have access to is determined HBR's licensing agreement with the databases we subscribe to. This means there may be instances where we lose access to case studies and articles without notice. In order to prevent confusion, we recommend that faculty double check links before the start of term, and be prepared to offer alternatives in the event HBR pulls the case study. If the case study in question is essential, or there are no alternatives, HBR does allow for instructors to create coursepackets, but students must buy the packets in order to access them.

Licensing restrictions

While HBR allows its case studies to be used in classrooms and instructional settings, the same is not true of its articles.  Within Business Source Complete, articles may have the following use restriction:

"Copyright © Harvard Business Publishing. All Rights Reserved. This content is intended for individual research use only, subject to the following: Unless permission is expressly granted in a separate license, this content may NOT be used for classroom or teaching use, which includes teaching materials, electronic reserves, course packs or persistent linking from syllabi. Please consult your institution's librarian about the nature of relevant licenses held by your institution and the restrictions that may or may not apply.Unless permission is expressly granted in a separate license, this content may NOT be used in corporate training and/or as corporate learning materials. For corporate users, please consult the specific terms of your company's license(s) for complete information and restrictions. For more information and teaching resources from Harvard Business Publishing including Harvard Business School Cases, eLearning products, and business simulations please visit hbsp.harvard.edu. (Copyright applies to all Abstracts.)"

Please double check all HBR materials to ensure that they do not have the language above on the item record.
