Guide to the Special Collections and Archives Research Center

Arrival and Registration

While making an appointment is by no means required, contacting us in advance – whether by emailing us at, or by using our website to request materials in advance – will allow us to advise you of any Reading Room closures and provide other information that may affect your visit. Our online Events Calendar also lists all Reading Room closures and department events. Patrons who will be traveling long distances, or who are planning extended research visits, are especially encouraged to contact us in advance.

When you arrive, Public Services staff will walk you through the registration process. All patrons who wish to use materials in our Reading Room must register; a form of photo identification is required to register (e.g. student, faculty, staff ID; driver’s license, military ID, passport). During your visit, SCARC staff will retain your ID; it will be returned to you at the conclusion of your visit.

Patron registration lasts for one year, and can be renewed indefinitely.
