WSE 390: Global Issues in Renewable Materials : Finding Books

This guide provides tips on using library resources for writing assignments related to renewable materials.

Finding Books on Sustainability and Renewable Materials

There are specific "subject headings" for Sustainable Buildings and Sustainable Construction.   And. while there are many subject headings related to Renewable Energy , there is no subject heading for "renewable materials."  The subject heading for "Renewable Natural Resources"  exists and is good for policy and management related questions related to Conservation..  More useful headings may be "Sustainable [add subject term]" will find an array of books related to the use of sustainability in forestry, architecture, etc.

Often there is a call number associated with a particular subject heading as well.  For example, TH is the general call number for "building construction" and TH880 is more specifically where books on "sustainable" building reside.  TS is Manufacturing  and TS155.7 is devoted to books on ISO 14000 (the standard for environmental management assessment).  TP is chemical technology (where much of food science resides) and  TP248 is Biotechnology and TP248.65 its application to individual compounds or class of compounds.  HF is Commerce/Business and HF5413 is Marketing (specifically of "green" products).

Once you find an interesting title in the catalog, you can click on it and "virtually" browse the book titles around it by clicking on the call number. If you prefer to browse in person, most of these will be on the 1st floor.

When the book you want is checked out, remember you can use the button to "Try Summit Libraries" to see if another copy is available in Oregon of Washington.  If you request that copy -- it will be sent to the library circulation desk and usually be available in 3-5 business days.
