Experiment with the OSU Libraries Catalog; here are some hints:
- The call numbers can be useful as these locate the book both on the shelf but also in the context of the subject classification scheme used by most larger libraries. In the catalog, if you find a book and click on the call number, you will see the titles located around it on the shelf (usually on the same subject. For example here is the link to the call numbers surrounding your text book:
(SB is a classification assigned to horticulture/cultivated plants, and plants with an economic impact).
- Search by keyword.
- Use quotation marks around phrases. Ex: "invasive plants"
- Simple keyword search results are in relevancy order (not by date or alphabetical order) but if you use "" the order will be by date.
- Getting your hands on a book
- If you are an extended campus student or at the HMSC or Bend, use the "REQUEST" button in the catalog.
- If the book you want is checked out or you don't find it in your catalog search, use the "Try Summit Libraries" button and see if it's available at one of our partner libraries in Oregon, Washington or Idaho.
- If you choose to begin in the Summit catalog, click on the line that tells you how many libraries have the book. If OSU doesn't have it, or our copy is checked out, click on "Request Summit Item"
- You will be asked which library you are at (select Oregon State University)
- You will be asked for your last name and OSU ID number
- Finally you will be asked for a "pick up location" -- if you are an Extended campus student who is not also located in Corvallis, Newport, or Bend, select "OSU - Extended campus" so it can be sent on to you.
- If you have questions about a request, contact valley.remote@oregonstate.edu.
