How to Be an Anti-Racist Book Club Guide

This guide includes the curriculum you need to run a book club based on Ibram X. Kendi's How to Be an Anti-Racist, as well as supplementary reading and videos.

Chapter 7

A downloadable copy of this guide can be found here.

Goals for Chapter 7

  • Understand the terms "culture" and "professionalism"
  • Identify aspects of your own culture
  • Critique the use of "professionalism" in the workplace.

Discussion Questions

Go over the group agreements, then discuss the following questions:

  • How has it been for you since the last meeting? Did anything from the book stick with you during that time?
  • What were your “aha!” moments while reading this chapter?
  • Compare and contrast “culture” with “professionalism”. What word do we use more here at OSULP? What does that mean about our workplace?
  • Think about ways in which we use professionalism at the library. How does culture affect this, and what cultures are being prioritized?
  • Kendi lists several things that made up his culture: Tims, rap music, fresh clothes, basketball. What are things that make up your culture? Where do you see intersections?
  • In what ways have white people absorbed Black culture? Other cultures? Does this ever go backwards (i.e., Black culture absorbing an artifact of white culture)? How do power dynamics play into this?

Wrap up: Depending on time, you may ask people to put these in chat

  • What is a specific action you can take in the next week that is anti-racist?
  • What worked today? What didn’t work?
