How to Be an Anti-Racist Book Club Guide

This guide includes the curriculum you need to run a book club based on Ibram X. Kendi's How to Be an Anti-Racist, as well as supplementary reading and videos.

Chapter 2

A downloadable copy of this guide can be found here.

Goals for Chapter 4

  • Understand and unpack the meaning of 'microaggression'
  • Define the difference between biological anti-racism and biological racism
  • Define and critique the differences between segregationism, assimilationism, and antiracism

Discussion Questions

Go over the group agreements, then discuss the following questions:

  • How has it been for you since the last meeting? Did anything from the book stick with you during that time?
  • What were your “aha!” moments while reading this chapter?

  • Kendi writes quite a lot on the term ‘microaggression’ (last line of page 45 through middle of page 47). What are your thoughts about this term?
    • How many of us are familiar with the term microaggression?
    • How many of us use the term?

  • Kendi very strongly speaks against the term microaggression. Will you follow his lead? Why or why not?
    • When is the term helpful? When is it harmful?

  • How does Kendi’s discussion of the falsehood of biological superiority land with you?
    • As a science and research institution?

Wrap up: Depending on time, you may ask people to put these in chat

  • What is a specific action you can take in the next week that is anti-racist?
  • What worked today? What didn’t work?
