The Best of Nautical Quarterly by
Founded in 1978 by the late writer and editor Joe Gribbins, the Nautical Quarterly established in its 50-issue existence standards of writing and design never approached before or since by a nautical magazine. The concept was simple to describe but difficult to execute: Each issue was a 120-page hardcover with 11 or 12 illustrated articles covering just about every maritime topic imaginable, from sailboats to powerboats, and from seals to Hermann Goerring's private yacht. And because Gribbins paid double what any other contemporary publication offered, the best nautical writers, photographers, and illustrators clamoured to be featured in NQ. In addition, deceased literary and art figures such as Jack London, William Faulkner, and Winslow Homer were also featured. As a result, each issue was both a journalistic and a visual triumph. Here, then, is The Best of Nautical Quarterly, Vol. I: Under Sail - twenty of NQ's best sail-related articles spanning all 12 years of publication and preserving NQ's signature design and trim. The articles for inclusion here are yet to be selected, but will be reproduced from original film. Preceding the selection will be a short history of NQ by nautical author Anthony Dalton, as well as a foreword by Jim Gilbert, publisher of Showboat magazine (dedicated to superyachts, not riverboats).

Lascars and Indian Ocean Seafaring, 1780-1860 by
Shortlisted for the Royal Historical Society's 2016 Gladstone Prize. Lascars were seamen from the Indian subcontinent and other areas of the Indian Ocean region who were employed aboard European ships from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries. They experienced difficult working conditions and came from a wide variety of ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds, which created considerable scope for friction between them and their European officers. This book, based on extensive original research, examines the role of lascars employed aboard country ships, East Indiamen and other British sailing vessels. The focus is on protest in its various forms, from mild unrest to violent acts of mutiny in which lascar crews murdered officers, seized ships and then sought refuge with local rulers. It is only through descriptions of such events - found in logbooks, seafaring diaries and the East India Company's judicial records - that many aspects of lascar life at sea become visible and lascar voices can be heard. Through the study of mutiny and other forms of protest, the book provides a detailed insight into shipboard conditions amongst lascars employed during this period. Transitioning to Sustainable Life Below Water by
The ocean plays a central role in the life and development of human kind. Besides space for navigation and trade (roughly 10 billion tons of commodities are transported across the oceans each year), the provision of biological and non-living resources is the most important service of the marine ecosystems. Yet, these ecosystems are increasingly impeded by human activities and interventions. Human and naturally induced changes in climate are buffered by the ocean, but its capacity to compensate the increase of CO2 in the atmosphere is at its limit. The increase of global temperatures and the decrease of oxygen concentration and pH are severe stressors for aquatic species and thus for the whole ecosystem. Urbanisation and population growth at the coast, along with severe levels of pollution, are stressing coastal environments and hampering or interrupting life cycles of species as well as the well established and naturally balanced internal interconnections within and between ecosystems. Mining for oil and gas is interfering with fisheries, competing for space with other sectors and increasing the risks for large scale pollution. The result is a decline in ecosystem services and a negative feedback into the socio-economic systems.
The volume Transitioning to Sustainable Life below Water will address critical issues in ocean use and reflect against goals and targets of SDG 14 and other relevant SDGs.
