OSU Libraries and Services during COVID-19

Valley Library Study Spaces

The Valley Library plans to use a phased approach to opening study spaces in fall 2020. At the start of the term, the Main Floor of the library is anticipated to be open from 10am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. Library workers will assess usage and conditions in the library during weeks 1 and 2; if conditions warrant, we plan to expand hours and/or open additional spaces. Library workers will assess:

  • Staffing levels and resources: Are they adequate and available to deliver services and maintain spaces?
  • Safety policies: Are students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the Valley Library complying with university safety policies?
  • Usage data: Does demand for space indicate a need for more spaces or hours?

Seat Reservations

The Valley Library building plans to be open by reservation only during fall 2020. You can reserve an individual study space or an individual computer workstation. There are no group study spaces available.

Reserve a seat.

Floor Closures

The first floor of the Valley Library will be closed during fall 2020 in order to store furniture removed from other floors, and to provide additional staff work spaces. There is also some loud and disruptive work that needs to be done on that floor during this term.

At the start of fall 2020, the main floor (2nd floor) of the Valley Library is scheduled to be open. Other floors will be closed. Floors 3-6 may open later in the term; decisions to open floors will be based on assessment data.

If you need material located on any floor that is closed, you can place a hold and library workers will retrieve it for you. If you aren't sure what you need, or if you have any other questions, please Ask a Librarian.

What to expect when you arrive at the library

  • When you arrive at the main doors of the Valley library you will be greeted by a staff member who will check you in if you have an advance reservation or create a reservation for you.
  • You will be required to wear a face covering and follow signage encouraging physical distancing in accordance with OSU policies.
  • A staff member will either escort you to your seat, or show you the way on a map.
  • Each seat has a sign identifying the seat number and a corresponding QR code.
  • Each seat has a tabletop flip chart with notices showing whether the seat is available, needs cleaning, or the occupant will be coming back soon.
  • We are not allowing food in the library at this time. While the water fountains are covered, the water bottle refill stations are available.
  • The library is open for quiet, individual study only. Plan to spend the majority of your time in your reserved space.
  • Use headphones when listening to music or videos.
